I want to lean a bit into the esoteric, and talk about what it means to really OWN (embrace) a survival axe.
You see, owning a survival axe is so much deeper than simply owning an item. A survival axe is a statement piece about who you are, and what you value. It doesn’t necessarily mean you’re rugged and outdoorsy, but that you value ruggedness and outdoors…ness.
Silly made up words aside, there’s something about having a hatchet hanging in your garage, in your bug out bag, or in your nightstand drawer that appeals to the primitive nature of man in ways few things can. Perhaps it’s because of the primitive nature of the tool. A simple metal wedge on a stick. Think about that. Metal. Taken from the ground, bent to our will, altered, improved, and made useful. Pulled from the ground and placed into service. There’s something uniquely empowering about that.
Then you have a stick. Not just any stick, but a crafted piece of carefully selected lumber. Chosen for it’s many properties, and carefully attached to the magnificent wedge we’ve come to know and love. It’s a thing of beauty. It’s a tool, a weapon, and a statement.
It signifies a dominance of nature (metal), while still being deeply attached to nature (a stick). It is the go-to survival tool because it is as rugged as the people who carry one. This amazing tool — das wondertool — simply amplifies the characteristics of the one carrying it.
With a survival axe you can build a shelter, slaughter a critter, plant a crop, and a plethora of other things to keep you alive. But, more importantly, it allows you to connect with a deeper you. A more primal you. A more real you.
Or maybe it’s just me.
